Daniel Stark, a disc jockey for the ULM student-run radio station 91X, has taken on the huge responsibility of raising money for the station by organizing a music festival.

The vision is 91X Shock Stock 2010, a one-day musical extravaganza featuring local bands and the nationally known recording artist Dax Riggs as the headliner.

Riggs, formerly with the band Acid Bath, now plays more acoustic/folk style music, Stark said. The artist who has been on Austin City Limits is fairly well known in the area.

The CAB sponsored festival is scheduled for May 23 from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. in the Grove on the ULM campus.

Stark's plan for the Shock Stock 2010 has many purposes.

"We want to raise money for the station," he said, "and create awareness for the music scene. But we want to give recent grads a chance to relax and listen to music and let their hair down."

He and his partner in the venture, Dustin Underwood, also hope the event will reinforce the relationship between the university and the community.

The two want to "stimulate the local music scene by shocking the life back into local live music," Stark said.

Gold Zombie, a duo that includes ULM mass communications senior Jason Cheek from Rayville, will be on hand. Gold Zombie plays a "hybrid" electronic and blues.

Prestor John, another local duo, includes ULM music major Jimmy Bryant. Stark describes their music as alternative rock with very worldly imprints.

"Jimmy is a great violist, and they play a lot of good original stuff," he said.

For country fans, Stark and Underwood have booked .

"It's hard to find a good country band around here, and they are really good," Stark said. "The guitar player is phenomenal."

Kenneth Sanders, an engineer for 91X and KEDM, will have his band 60 Cycle at the festival.

Other bands include Hunter and the 3D Glasses, Navigator (alternative Southern rock), Self Illusion, Swamp Fox Theory and the Denton, Texas, band Fo Destroyer.

Stark is still booking bands, but he says that The Revelry and Villain for a Moment are on his list of possibilities.

In addition to the music, Stark said there will be food and beer booths as well as fund and games. Local visual artists will be displaying their works, too.

Admission to the event is only $7. It is free for children 12 years old and under.

Villain for a Moment should have been one of the first groups contacted for this! all of its members except the drummer who is a high school senior are ULM students and the band draws a large crowd wherever they go. (Continued…)

Villain for a Moment was a band we wanted to get on the bill. It was nothing personal, only the communication between us and a few bands we were not able to get needed improvement. (Continued…)
