The ULM men's basketball team fought hard, but came up short against the North Texas Mean Green, 74-71, at Fant-Ewing Coliseum on Feb. 27.
The Warhawks had several players score in double-figures including senior Guard Dynile Forbes, who led the Warhawks with 19 points and seven rebounds. Another senior, Tony Hooper, tied his season high with seven assists in the game. He also added six points and six rebounds, as his ULM career ends with his being one of the best players in school history.
Center Rudy Turner was scored 14 points in the contest, while Tommie Sykes was next in line with 12.
ULM (11-18, 6-12) started well and had a lead with 12:31 left in the first half, but the Mean Green's shooting warmed, leading into a 15-3 run. The run enabled North Texas (21-8, 13-5) to push the lead into a comfortable amount leading to halftime. The halftime score stood at 34-23 in North Texas's favor.
After the intermission, things still did not go well for the Warhawks, as they slipped behind by as much as 15 at the 13:31 mark in the second half. They caught fire and scored eight unanswered points to cut the deficit to seven points with nine minutes left to play. North Texas tried to expand the lead again, but a hot-shooting Warhawk team pulled to within four with 2:12 left to play. However, the effort was not enough as they fell, 74-71.
The Warhawks were able to make only 21 out of 59 shots, giving them a shooting percentage of 35.6 percent, but shot 85.2 percent from the charity stripe. The Warhawks also committed 20 turnovers in the contest, compared to the North Texas's 22 turnovers.
The Warhawks travel to Hot Springs on Saturday, Mar. 6-9 to play in the Sun Belt Tournament.
