The University of Louisiana at Monroe women's basketball team sent off three of its seniors as victors, as the ULM Warhawks defeated the North Texas Mean Green, 63-58, at Fant-Ewing Coliseum on Feb. 27.
ULM (10-18, 4-14 Sun Belt) fended off a pesky Mean Green squad that tied up the game with three minutes left to play after trailing by 11 in the second half. However, North Texas (8-21, 5-13) was not able to overcome the Warhawks' clutch free throw shooting.
"I'm proud of this win," said ULM women's basketball head coach Mona Martin. "We needed it. It's a good way to go into the conference tournament."
Sophomore guard Elizabeth Torres continued her late-season surge with 18 points in the contest, and five of those coming in the last three minutes of the game. The Keller, Texas native's well-rounded contest included six rebounds, six steals and five assists.
Sannisha Williams had a birthday to remember after she recorded 13 points and 13 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season and the eight of her career.
The Mean Green took control of the game early with a lead of 14-6 at the 13:27 mark in the first half. North Texas cooled down and ULM's shooting heated up as the score at halftime was 30-25 in the Warhawks' favor. After letting North Texas get a one-point lead at with 14 minutes left, ULM regained the lead 14-2, pushing the advantage to 50-39 with 7:07 left.
The Mean Green answered with a 13-2 run of their own, as mistakes by the Warhawks allowed the game to be tied at 52-52 with three minutes left to go in the game, ULM regained the lead as the team made nine of 11 free throws to assist with the win.
The game was special because the collegiate careers of Jesse Carrier, Shannon Davis, and Ashley Wallis were celebrated in a special Senior Night ceremony.
Wallis has been nursing an injury that has sidelined her for the whole season, but Carrier left the home crowd with two points, seven rebounds, and three steals. Davis's performance in her home finale was also strong as she posted six points, five rebounds, and two steals.
Next up for the Warhawks is the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Hot Springs, Ark. from Mar. 6-9.
