Speech and Debate Win Eight of Ten Events in Individual Events Tournament
The ULM Speech and Debate team traveled to Bossier Parish Community College to compete in their second Individual Events Tournament of the semester, where the results of members on the team and the team as well has shown that all the hard work and practice have paid off.
"We excelled at a level that amazed me. My teammates and myself have all worked very hard, and we have all progressed significantly from the beginning of the semester," said competitor Raymond Swalley.
The team had a total entry of ten events split amongst four competitors and took an amazing eight of those events of the final round.
Competitors taking home trophies included Alicia Hodges who placed fourth in Prose Reading; Ritchie Conley who placed third in Prose Reading and fourth in Dramatic Interpretation; Raymond Swalley who placed first in Impromptu Speaking, second in Poetry, fifth in Extemporaneous Speaking and fifth in Prose Reading; and Sevil Alieva who placed third in Poetry.
Sweepstakes awards include Second Place Individual Competitor won by Raymond Swalley and Second Place Team Sweepstakes won by the team itself.
The event marks the teams first Individual Events team trophy brought back to the school since 2006.
The team will travel to Hutchinson, Kansas on March 26 to compete in the Novice National Tournament where they will hope to continue to bring back more positive results to ULM.
"I think we have a great chance at bringing back something from Kansas. It's not going to be a walk in the park, and we are going to have to continue to practice and progress; but I think we can go there, compete and make some things happen," Swalley said.
