The University of Louisiana at Monroe women's basketball team fell to the Western Kentucky Lady Toppers, 83-59, at the Fant-Ewing Coliseum on Feb. 3.
ULM (9-14, 3-10) played a mistake-free game with only nine turnovers. However, Western Kentucky shot 65.3 percent from the field and 71.4 percent from three-point range.
"We came out with a really good game plan," said ULM women's basketball head coach Mona Martin. "We were trying to mix up thing and we did a pretty good job on that, but [Kenzie Rich] had not scored well lately and had not shot the ball well, and I knew it was going to happen."
Junior guard Kenzie Rich gave the Warhawks the most trouble after scoring a career-high 29 points on 11-for-13 shooting. Rich was also deadly from long range with seven threes, another career-high.
"That's what good shooters do," Martin said. "She'd been in a slump, and it was her night."
Jesse Carrier led the Warhawks with 14 points, while Sannisha Williams added in 12 points. Priscilla Mbiandja was the only other ULM player to score in double-digits with 10 points.
Rich set the tone early and often for the Lady Toppers with six points in the game's first 2:21 to give Western Kentucky a 6-2 lead. ULM tried their best to hang on but they trailed 37-27 at halftime.
The second half would be more of the same, as Western Kentucky shot a blistering 70.8 percent down the stretch to preserve and build upon the halftime lead. The Warhawks narrowed the deficit down to eight points with 6:16 remaining, but the Toppers were just too strong and ended the game on a 22-6 run.
The Warhawks will take some time off before heading out to the state of Arkansas for a two-game road trip. They will take on Arkansas St. on Feb. 8 and Arkansas-Little Rock on Feb. 10. ULM will return to the Coliseum on Feb. 17 with a showdown against in-state rival New Orleans.
