Feb. 4 was a historic day for the ULM Warhawks as they welcomed the Western Kentucky University Hilltoppers into the Fant-Ewing Coliseum, and won on a last-second free throw, 67-66.
The Warhawks (10-14, 5-8 Sun Belt) opened the game fired up, commanding the lead from the tip-off. Through the first media time out the Warhawks held a six point lead shooting over 62% from the field and perfect from behind the arc.
The Warhawks never looked back in the first half, as they either held the lead or were tied through that stretch, and ended it with a 10 -point lead of 38-28. Dynile Forbes had a huge first half with 20 points, and he shot 6-for-7 from the field, 6-for-6 from three-point range and 2-for-2 from the charity stripe.
Down but not out, Western Kentucky (12-11, 5-6 Sun Belt) mounted a furious comeback in the second half as they contained Forbes. The Hilltopppers began the second half on a rampage and refused to slow down. WKU got out to a quick 8-0 run, and soon took over the lead with 11:56 in regulation and pushed it up to as high as six points with five minutes left in the second half.
ULM bended, but did not break after tying up the score at 60 with 3:19 to go, but a pair of three by the Hilltoppers made the score a six-point deficit at the 2:07 mark. Western Kentucky would not score any more for the rest of the game and ULM crept back into the game, with a three-pointer by Kenneth Averette tying the game at 66 with 25 seconds left.
The Hilltoppers had one last chance to leave Monroe with a victory, but as Sergio Kerusch tried to hold the ball for the last shot, Lawrence Gilbert made a key steal with five seconds. Gilbert then passed the ball to Forbes, but Kerusch fouled him with 1.7 seconds left setting two crucial free throws. Forbes made the first free throw, to give ULM the lead but missed the second. Western Kentucky's dreams of a miracle game-winning shot were dashed after the inbounds pass was deflected, giving ULM the win.
Despite the quiet second half, Forbes finished the game with 22 points and five rebounds. Rudy Turner played like a man on a mission, as he rejected any and everything early with five blocks alone in the first half. Turner finished the game with 11 points, eight rebounds, and six blocks.
For the Hilltoppers, Jeremy Evans led his team with 19 points and five blocks. Evans collected four offensive rebounds, while guard A.J. Slaughter contributed 18 points and four assists to his team.
ULM will go on the road for its next two games, but will also have a full week before their next game at UALR on Feb. 11. The Warhawks will return to the Fant-Ewing Coliseum on Thursday Feb. 18 to host the University of New Orleans Privateers.
