Manning guided his team down the field once more, but the offense stalled and lined up to kick a 51-yard field goal. The attempt wound up unsuccessful, and it gave New Orleans a chance to take things over for good. Brees completed all seven his passes on the drive with the last one resulting in a two-yard reception by Jeremy Shockey.
The Saints went for a two-point conversion and the officials initially declared the attempt no good, but with much deliberation, the call was reversed and the Saints held a 24-17 lead.
Manning had one last chance to keep the Colts in the game and to hopefully force overtime, but his errant throw to Porter led to a defensive touchdown for New Orleans. Manning tried to shake off the bad memories on the drive after, but it was too little and too late, as Indianapolis turned the ball over on downs and succumbed to the Saints.
As the Saints took one final knee, their dream became a reality and it allowed a city that went through so much a chance to rejoice.
