On January 26, the ULM University Planning Council met on the seventh floor of the library to discuss the status of each committee's projects. The purpose of the UPC is to have the diverse group of members advise the administration about how to respond to the changes that higher education encounters.

The UPC acts as an advisory council to the senior administration of ULM. The council provides a place to address issues of interest to the university, seek information related to certain issues and make recommendations about the best way to solve these issues.

"I believe it has helped the university improve," said Associate Provost Eric Pani. "It has made us look at some things we have needed to review--our curricula, our degree programs, how we define faculty workload, how we can be more efficient and a host of other issues-all of which have or will soon help improve ULM.

"The answer to improving the budget situation is more difficult," he said.  "In one sense, only increased budgets would improve the budget situation and that is not something that the UPC can do."

Another purpose of this council is to guide the faculty and staff on ULM's strategic and tactical plans. In Fall 2009, the University Planning Council's committees began investigating several specific areas of the university to look closely at anything that will improve the current budget situation.

The six "task force" areas under investigation are academic productivity and performance, administrative productivity and performance, curriculum review, program review, revenue generation and student success.

Each task force was formed to gather information so ULM would be well-informed when the time comes to react to the results from the Louisiana Postsecondary Education Review Commission (also known as the Tucker Commission) and when other budget cuts are required. The task forces accomplish their work at a fast pace so the university has the information ready when it needs to take action.
