The ULM volleyball team has been preparing for a redemption season, coming off a 1-31 losing record in the 2008 season. The Warhawks will be lead this year by senior Mari O'Neal, who led the team offensively with 219 kills; junior Christy Tribble, who led with 274 digs defensively; and sophomore Ashley Bland, with 88 blocks.
The Warhawks lost starting setter sophomore Helen Theissen during summer workouts due to transfer. Theissen accumulated 561 of the Warhawks total 884 assists in the 2008 campaign.
The Warhawks took their first step down that road in the Samford Invitational in Birmingham, Ala., with a little success. ULM was not able to open the season with a victory after losing 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-8) to the Samford Bulldogs on Aug. 29.
However, they did play well, being led by sophomore Meghan McCoy with a career high of 16 assists. Unfortunately for the Warhawks, the rest of the team only tallied one more assist, and their total of 17 was almost doubled by Samford, who had 30 assists for the match, being led by Casey Garvery and Hillary Fountain.
The Warhawks would fare no better in day two, after being swept by the Tennessee State Tigers and the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles. McCoy played well again for the Warhawks, moving her recently set career record in assists to 26 in a single match.
The Warhawks will be looking to win their first game at home in the ULM Activity Center on Tuesday, Sept. 1, against the Grambling State Tigers in ULM's home opener.
