After a nine month hiatus for players to rest, workout and get prepared for a new season, football is back.
Last season, the Warhawk football team finished at 4-8 overall and 3-4 in Sun Belt Conference play, which was good enough to be tied for third place in the conference.
They did make some noise in 2008, however, after nearly beating the University of Arkansas Razorbacks and beating the Troy University Trojans, who would wind up to be the Sun Belt champion.
This season, the ULM offense will be operated by junior Trey Revell at quarterback. The Havana, Fla., native saw only limited action last season, but he orchestrated the game-winning drive that gave the Warhawks a 31-30 win over Troy, and that sent the Malone Stadium faithful into euphoria.
Revell will have two primary targets to throw to this season in senior wide-receivers Darrell McNeal and LaGregory Sapp.
McNeal is coming from an impressive 2008 season that saw him record his second straight year of at least 50 receptions, while catching a personal best of ten against the Middle Tennessee State University Blue Raiders.
This year, he will have Sapp to help him out in the receiving duties, after Sapp was able to practice with the team only last year. However, Sapp caught 33 passes for 483 yards and garnered three touchdowns in 2007, the last year that he played.
Junior Frank Goodin returns as the starting running back looking to improve upon a solid 2008 that saw him gain 783 yards and five touchdowns on 182 carries.
Defensively, linebacker Cardia Jackson returns for his senior season looking to lead the Warhawks in tackles for the third year in a row. In 2007, he had 79 total tackles while he had 79 unassisted tackles last year. His 127 total tackles were the most by any ULM player since 2002, when Chris Harris posted that same amount. Jackson also became the first Warhawk to record 100 tackles since 2004 when John Winchester made 105 stops.
