Track Does Well in Classic

The ULM Track and Field team held its annual Warhawk Classic on Saturday April 25 at Brown Stadium.
The team performed well for its home crowd and received many first-place finishes. The team was ready to compete after they held their annual Track Banquet with family members on April 24. The team came out expecting success in this meet to take momentum to the Sun Belt Conference meet.
The women's team had eight first finishes starting with sophomore Marcie Richard in the javelin throw, with a distance of 43.3 meters.
Regional qualifier, Destiny Montemayor won the hammer toss with a distance of 55.89 meters and returned later to claim victory in the discus throw with a distance of 43.31 meters.
Sun Belt Conference Indoor Champion, Lakeitha Elmore once again claimed her title in the shot put throw with a distance of 13.54 meters.
Regional qualifier, Heather Davis claimed another title in the women's high jump finishing with a height of 1.80 meters.
Senior Sadrina Shaw ran a regional qualifying time of 13.94 seconds in the women's 100 meter hurdles and also later returned to win the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 64.4 seconds.
Junior Vickee Floyd claimed her first 100 meter dash title of the season against teammate Bola Shoyebi. Floyd ran a time of 12.14s while Shoyebi clocked in at 12.15s. Shoyebi also competed in the 200 meter dash, taking victory with a time of 24.05s.
Also, the women's 4x100 meter relay team comprised of Dominque McAdoo, Shoyebi, Shaw, and Floyd claimed victory with a time of 46.11s.
The men's team finished with a remarkable ten first place finishes beginning with All-American sophomore, Kyle Kent in the javelin throw.
Sophomore, Moses Chelimo took first in the 3000 meter steeple chase with a time of 9:49.59.
Sophomore Jarvis Mansfield, in his run for the Sun Belt Conference title, claimed victory with a time of 14.7s in the 110 meter hurdles.
Senior Brandon Smithers won the men's long jump with a jump of 7.10m and sophomore Josh Howard took the title in the triple jump with a distance of 14.94m.
Senior Andrew Opata finished the 800m run ahead with a time of 1:55.31.
Senior, Mychal Word, setting a new career best, ran a time of 46.37m in the 400m dash. Word is a double event qualifier in the Regional Meet after qualifying in the 400m hurdles last week with a time of 51.71s.
The men also claimed first in highly competitive 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:11, the team was comprised of Keyon Jones, Opata, Isaac Combs, and Word.
Head Coach J.D. Malone is pleased with the results and encourages his team in every meeting in his final words of, "They can be beat."
The team will be given next weekend off from a meet so that they can rest and prepare for Sun Belt Conference meet on Friday, May 8 and bring home the first place trophy.
