PREP sessions are underway, and hundreds of incoming freshmen are coming to experience life at ULM.
PREP is a two-day program that is designed to orient students with ULM. This year's theme is: ULM: It's Worth It. Students learn about academics, campus activities, and student organizations. The most important purpose of PREP is to allow students to register for their fall classes.
On the first day of PREP, students have the opportunity to take placement and CLEP tests. Following testing, there is a welcome ceremony. Then, students are invited to a picnic lunch at the Alumni Center. After lunch, students take tours of the bookstore and the Wig Wam.
Next, students attend Traditions 101 to learn more about the history of the university. Students then take a bus tour of the campus to learn the location of important campus buildings.
Next, students attend ULM 101 to learn how to use the course catalogue and the schedule of classes. Following ULM 101 is the activities marketplace, which showcases student organizations. Then students will attend a variety show.
"The variety show is ULM meets Saturday Night Live," said Ashley Ellis, director of the PREP program.
To end the day, students enjoy dinner and the band L.C. Smooth in Scott Plaza.
Day two begins with another opportunity for testing. Students may then attend their choice of three informational sessions sponsored by Greek Life, the Honors program, Food Services, Residential Life, Recreational Services, Commuter Students, NCAA Athletes, and Student Life.
Next, students participate in one of PREP's most popular events, the spirit competition, for a chance to win a $1,000 gift certificate to the bookstore.
"The spirit competition has been really successful," Ellis said.
PREP staff member Ashley Parker agrees.
"Students really enjoy the spirit competition," said the Camden, Ark. nursing junior.
Next, students learn how to use the ARROW system and their tribe e-mail accounts. Students then attend a financial aid session.
Finally, the students are advised and are able to register for their fall classes.
"I think the PREP sessions are going very well," Parker said. "The students are happy that they're learning a lot about the campus."
"PREP has been really successful," said PREP staff member Shonda Butts. " It is a learning experience, not only for the students but also for the PREP staff.
"As time goes on, we get better and better at what we do," said the Jonesville pre-occupational therapy sophomore. "We are helping students learn about the university and helping them to develop a sense of pride in ULM."
"I am excited about this freshmen class," Ellis said. "They believe that ULM has something to offer both academically and socially."
