Changes are being made to the Village on the Bayou.
The renovations to Madison and Ouachita that began in the summer of 2004 are now being completed. The bathrooms and breezeways in both dorms have been remodeled and individual room climate control has been added.
In place of Sherrouse, three new apartment buildings have been built and will be open for students in the fall. There are four bedroom/two bathroom apartments, two bedroom/two bathroom apartments, and one bedroom/one bathroom apartments. There are also handicap accessible apartments. Students sign individual leases for the apartments. The apartments are now available for students with at least 20 hours and a minimum 2.3 g.p.a.
The apartments feature custom designed furniture, computer desks, high speed internet access in each bedroom, extended cable with HBO, local phone service in each bedroom, utilities, washer and dryer, individual apartment climate control, white appliances with microwave, dishwasher, and oven, upgraded cabinets, security systems, and ceiling fans in bedrooms and living rooms.
Where Olin Hall once stood tall and proud, Olin Suites are being constructed. Students will have the choice of two bedroom/one bathroom private suites or one bedroom/one bathroom shared suites.
The suites will include custom designed furniture, computer desks, high speed internet access in each bedroom, extended cable with HBO, local phone service in each bedroom, utilities, individual suite climate control, on-site laundry, and ceiling fans in bedrooms.
Two more suite-style dorms will be built in place of Slater, Monroe, and the police station.
Students have mixed emotions about the campus renovations.
"The new buildings look nice," said Morris Mitchell, M.B.A. student. "They are reasonably priced considering all the amenities that they include."
"I don't think there will be enough housing after Breard, Harris, and Cosper come down," said Jennifer McGee, pre-occupational therapy sophomore from Vivian.
