The overall results of the competitions were announced at Saturday's homecoming game against Florida International University.
The power lifting team won $1000 for its first place win. Tau Beta Sigma won $500 for second place, and Panhellenic took home $250 for placing third.
"The groups that participated with the most effort are the groups that placed in this year's Homecoming week," said Eric Whitten, CAB faculty advisor.
An independent team called Spirit Groups won first in the spirit banner competition. Panhellenic placed second, and the power lifting team won third.
Another fun part of homecoming was the Olympic activities that included events such as root beer chugging and hot dog eating contests.
Sigma Phi Epsilon came in first while power lifting placed second. Spirit Groups garnered a third place finish.
Each team competing in homecoming week contests also sponsored a contestant in the Miss FIU pageant. The Miss FIU pageant was a competition in which males dressed in drag to compete for the title of Miss FIU.
The Panhellenic contestant, David John, received first place in the Miss FIU pageant. Second went to the power lifting team contestant, and Zeta Phi Beta's lovely lady, Moe Mitchell, placed third.
Monday night, comedian John Roy entertained students in the Nursing Auditorium. Roy, a winner of television's Star Search competition, will soon be featured in an HBO comedy special.
"Most students were pleasantly surprised with the results of the comedy show," said Whitten.
Wednesday night saw students gathering in the Grove for a drive-in movie. The blockbuster action flick, Spider Man 2, was the featured movie.
"The weather was great and the students really enjoyed the movie," said Whitten.
As the week neared its end, ULM's official university ring was unveiled at a pep rally on Friday. The university ring is a new way for ULM to continue to build rich traditions and pride with easily recognizable symbols that celebrate ULM's culture and history.
The Jostens-designed ring prominently features several symbols that represent different facets of ULM. One such feature is 1931, recognizing ULM's beginning as Ouachita Parish Junior College. The first classes opened on September 28th, 1931.
Drawing inspiration from the picturesque Bayou Desiard and ULM's own alma mater, a flowing bayou graces one side of the ring. Six cypress trees represent each new stage in ULM's growth from Ouachita Parish Junior College through its days as Northeast Louisiana University, culminating with today's ULM.
Below the cypress trees, an Indian symbolizes a composite of local Native American tribes, reflecting the mural on the Student Union Building. Underneath the ring's stone lies the official seal of ULM, encouraging students to always seek the truth.
A final detail caps the stone. A stylized "L" in the center of the stone represents athletic traditions at ULM, including significant accomplishments in football, basketball, track, golf, tennis, baseball, softball, and swimming and diving, as well as representing all of the athletes who have competed on ULM's fields since 1931.
One of the final events of Homecoming week was the crowning of the king and queen Saturday during half time.
Senior Ashley Denell Smith, escorted by Jesse Handy, was crowned Homecoming Queen.
Smith, a criminal justice major from Monroe, has been on the dean's list, the President's list, and serves as president of Zeta Phi Beta sorority. She was also recently named criminal justice's most outstanding student.
Senior Garren Bunton, escorted by Dr. Valerie Fields, was crowned Homecoming King.
Bunton is a mass communications major from Chicago, IL. His activities and honors include president of Alpha Phi Alpha, president of National Pan-Hellenic council. He has also served on the Campus Activities Board and Alpha Lambda Delta Honors Society.
The 2004 Homecoming Court included Andrea Ford and Tricia Green, freshman court maids; Crystal Kelly and Victoria Williams, sophomore court maids; Jillian Fruge and Ayan Martin, junior court maids; Michelle Biley and Sarah Thomas, senior court maids.
Capping off Homecoming Week, the ULM Indians drove home a decisive, 28-20 victory over FIU, making for a perfect end to a fun-filled and exciting week.
